The Voice of…Mural Workshop
In October 2021, muralists Hans Lundy and Malcolm Rolling of YENDOR, and Express Newark’s Form Design Studio hosted a community mural workshop at the Newark Public Library Annex. The workshop centered around diasporic oral traditions written in English, Creole, and French. Guests were guided by the artists on the use of stencils and spray paint as a primary mural technique. Each guest left with a stencil from the workshop to further explore on their own.
Code Glitching with IMVisible
In October and November of 2021, the artist collective IMVisible hosted two community roundtables to conceptualize a mural for Focus Hispanic Center For Community Development. Code switching is oftentimes imperfect and creates a glitch in our language. Reclaiming this glitch as a creative act of resistance, the workshops explored these intricacies to conceptualize a collaborative mural. The workshop was open to immigrants, first generation sons and daughters and people who’ve felt the need to assimilate to a larger culture or work environment and created an opportunity to hear and learn from shared experiences.
