Parklets (2024)
In spring 2024, NJIT and the Newark Artist Collaboration launched a curriculum that bridges art and design to transform urban spaces. In light of changing perceptions of public versus private areas following the COVID-19 pandemic, this program centers on the intersection of pedestrian, cyclist, and automotive experiences.
The ARCH 296: Design and Build Studio engaged Newark students in a hands-on approach to urban design, allowing them to collaborate with local artists to conceive and construct innovative "parklets". These parklets creatively reinterpret standard parking spaces, transforming them into vibrant public havens that foster community interaction, sustainability, and artistic expression. Throughout the semester, students worked closely with Newark artists to design and build these parklet structures at NJIT, completing four installations which each represent a different ward of Newark.
This program both facilitates collaboration between students and local artists, and underscores the importance of reimagining urban environments in response to contemporary challenges.

The East Ward parklet is a project about community, experience and colors. The initial iterations, which used color patterns and different table and seating configurations to interact with lights, space and flows of people, influenced the design elements and structure. The panels produce new hues that evoke new feelings while highlighting cultural identities distinctions. Every panel is unique; some have the students’ names, others feature the graphic design of Gisela Ochoa, who collaborated with the class on the project. The parklet's use of color and sun to create distinct emotional experiences throughout the day is crucial: the variety of colors reflects the diversity of the city of Newark, especially in the Ironbound district, where the project will be located. The structure, which consists of long, horizontal beams crossed by vertical posts for support, is modeled after the idea of linearity and can be fully and easily taken apart, moved and rebuilt. The parklet allows different configurations through the use of movable tables, which helps foster community involvement and allows residents to have a memorable experience.

WWMX: West Ward Matrix
The WWMX (West Ward Matrix) is a parklet for residents of the west ward of Newark, NJ. The main concept of this parklet is the codependency between the two materials: ratchet straps and wood framed modules. With its form, the blue, yellow, and green make the parklet pop out, with precise thought put into how and where it was added. The modules are connected to each other, creating unique moments within the walls and roof of the parklet, while the ratchet straps hold down the wood-framed modules while keeping them secured to the base for safety. Not only do the ratchet straps hold down the modules, they are also used as seating and shading for the community. This parklet can be used as a relaxation spot, extra seating, or for community gatherings.
