Themes for Exploration

Iconography of our neighborhood’s architectural, sculptural, and visual heritage. This includes Downtown Newark, Tubman Square (formerly Washington Park), Manhattan, the Passaic River, the Sacred Heart Basilica, Four Corners/Broad & Market, the Walker House (old Bell Telephone Building), NJPAC, Newark Airport, Penn Station, Broad Street Station, Jackson Street Bridge, and the Pavilion & Colonnade Apartments.

The Seventh Avenue neighborhood (formally known as the first ward) acts as a bridge, connecting various communities. This area is distinguished by the space between the Orange Street and Broad Street stations on the Newark Light Rail. The Seventh Avenue neighborhood is bound by Interstate 280 to the south, Clifton Avenue to the west, Bloomfield Avenue to the north, and Broadway and Broad Street to the east. It is a space of overlap and intersection.

A contemporary mapping or visualization of moments, initiatives, and spaces that emphasize support, togetherness, and community. This could include: The Focus Hispanic Community Center, the YMCA, NJPAC’s education building embellished with handwritten typography by designer Paula Scher or community program “Sounds of the City” which draws annual large summer audiences, the many universities and education hubs, Halsey Street, and more!
